DISARMAMENT
Sir,—ln Mr Hector McNeil’s speech on behalf of the British Government he says, “We have disarmed and demobilised and are engaged in carrying our demobilisation still further.” Is this according to the facts as we knew them on this side of the world? In Britain’s last Budget, while Britain is on her knees pleading for American dollars, her people facing decreasing rations daily. was voted for defence. Defence from what? As regards demobilisation, the National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939 still governs the position, and it is under this act that conscription has already been provided for until the end of 1948. when lads of 18 are to be called up for 18 months. Is this disarmament and demobilisation? The only thing that amazes me is the credulity of intelligent men and women to trust without criticism the utterances of their self-styled leaders.—Yours, etc., H. W. LORD. September 30, 1947.
