VIBRATO

Sir, —I was pleased to read the outspoken comments of Mr C. Foster Browne on the subject of vocal vibrato. Every effort should be made to avoid the development of this serious fault. I would like to draw attention to another development in vocal rendering, ■this time deliberately cultivated. I refer to the excessive rolling of the letter “r.” when at the beginning or ending of any word. Like the makeup on a lady’s face, if used with discretion it can be charming; but when laid on with a trowel, it can be grotesque. Unfortunately, many of our leading singers do not realise this.— Yours, etc., September 29, 1947.
