TRAFFIC IN REGENT STREET

SHOPKEEPERS PETITION COUNCIL

A petition asking that New Regent street should not be a one-way street, and that the parking of motor-cars should be restricted to one side of the street, was received by the Christchurch City Council at its meeting this week. The petition, which was signed by 33 shopkeepers and shopowners, stated that a continuation of the one-way street would adversely affect their business. With parking on one side there was ample room available for through traffic from both ends of the street.

The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), who moved that the petition should be referred to the traffic committee for consideration and a report, said he had watched the street very carefully, and it seemed to him that with parking restricted to one side of the street there would be room for two-way traffic.
