SUNDAY CRICKET ON PARKS

TWO CLUBS GRANTED

WICKETS Sunday cricket on suburban parks was opposed by Cr. W. L. King at last evening’s meeting of the City Council. “Parks are for the people to use without having the fear of being hit ] by a cricket ball,” he said. Nine applications had been received for wickets to be used for regular Sunday play, reported the reserves committee, which recommended that the Linwood Locomotive Cricket Club and the Railway Traffic Cricket Club be granted wickets at Spreydon Domain, and that the Ace and Wanderers Cricket Club be granted the use of the two concrete wickets at Hillsborough Domain. No recommendations were made on the other applications, but it might be possible to grant them the use of “casual” wickets on occasions during the season. “Why discriminate between Hagley > Park and Spreydon Domain?” asked Cr. King. . > m Cr. J. N. Clarke (chairman of the reserves committee): Because one is out in the wilds. Cr. King: Be careful, because you have just been in trouble over Hagley Park. (Laughter.) Why don’t you send the cricketers to Fendalton. With Saturdays clear and play possible during the week from 5.30 P-m--to 8 p.m. from November until we end of February, we have plenty ox time to play cricket. Emphasising that he did not approve of the extension of Sunday play, cr. J. L. Hay said the wickets granted by the committee were to clubs wnicn could not play on Saturdays. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) saia the policy of the council was definitely not to allow organised games on panes on Sundays. , .. Cr. R. G.
