WATERSIDE WORKERS
Sir.—Replying to your sub-editorial of September 23. briefly the facts are that land and labour are wasted in producing non-essentials, such as hops and barley; also tons of good grain are misused yearly to feed racehorses Hundred of men are employed in maintaining this parasitical sport During the war and at present, shipping space is used to transport “booze” and racehorses “The Press’ has been silent regarding these economic wastages However, I note that Mr F. P Walsh, chairman of the Aid tc Britain campaign sees the ooint of mid-week sport interfering with production and causing unnecessary transport wastage (see press report. Wellington September 25> 1 agreed in my previous letter that it was unnecessarv to close down the port for the whole clay but “abuse is no argument,” and. the proper place for bias is the bowling green, not the press.-Yours, etc., WALLY THE WOW September 29, 1947.
