MOTOR-CYCLIST IN COLLISION WITH TRAM "The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. September 29. The strength of his shoelace saved a motor-cyclist who was involved in a collision with a tramcar near the Auckland Town Hall about 6.30 o’clock on Saturday evening from more serious injury or death. He was Mr Ronald Porter, married, of 716 Manukau road, Epsom, who was riding with Mr George Henry Gilmore, aged 22. married, motor driver, of Napier lane, Au ’kland, on the motor-cycle when the collision occurred. Mr Porter’s right leg was twisted behind his head when he was thrown from the motor-cycle, and his shoelace became caught over a bolt just ahead of the tram’s front wheel. He was carried beneath the chassis for abou* 30ft until the tram stopped with his head, about two inches from the wheel.
Mr Porter suffered a fractured right femur and his companion suffered a fractured right arm. Their condition is not sarkius.
