NEW BRIGHTON CLUB

TROTTING

Win For Ingle Belmer

SURE HARVEST’S GOOD DISPLAY followers of the favourites had a disastrous day at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday. Java, the winner of the Introductory Handicap, and Mistydale, the runner-up to Highland Dale in the Seaview Handicap, were the only favourites to return dividends. It was a black prelude to the spring meetings. Pre-Eminence returned his supporters a win dividend of nearly, half a century when he won the Farewell Handicap for Miss E. Scullion, who purchased him recently. Globe Direct finished half a length behind Pre-Eminence, and in a photo-finish for third place Golden Shadow just shaded Wade Lane. Allowed to go out 19-19 in the betting in a field of 20 betting chances, Golden Shadow returned his supporters a place dividend of more than half a century. Highland Dale, the winner of the Seaview Handicap, Ingle Belmer, the winner of the President’s Handicap, and Darrington Hall, the winner of the Bowhill Handicap, all returned their supporters win dividends of more than a quarter of a century. The weather was fine, the track was in good order, and a large crowd invested £110,260, compared with £84,890 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £25,370.

Sent out a hot favourite for the President’s Handicap, the main event on the programme. Maudeen made a valiant attempt to justify her support but she had to accept fourth place to Ingle Eelmer, Lady Ngaio, and Maori Home. Quite Happy and Ingle Belmer were the smartest to begin and with half a mile covered they were about six lengths clear of Snowflake. Absolutely, Pre-Eminence, Dillondale. Lady Ngaio, Golden Shadow, Maori Home, Checkmate. Lou Hall. Maudeen and Worthy Gold. Cameron gradually improved his position with Maudeen and with a mile to go she was handy to Quite Happy and Ingle Belmer. . Maudeen’s supporters were jubilant when she took over the role of pacemaker with more than four furlongs to go. With a mile and a half covered, Maudeen was clear, but Ingle Belmer challenged in the back straight and with three furlongs to go she was a length clear of Maudeen, with three lengths to Pre-Eminence, Snowflake. Checkmate, Lady Ngaio, Dillondale and Maori Home. After being two lengths clear of Maudeen. Lady Ngaio and Maori Home at the entrance to the straight, Ingle Belmer sustained her strong run to carrv on for an effortless win. Paraded in splendid condition, Ingle Belmer was confidently handled by A. G. Collison, who trains her at Meth ven for her breeder, Mr P A. Watson. The 1938 foal of Jack Potts. Ingle Belmer is out of the Key de Oro mare. Purple Patch, which left other good winners ir. Countless to the same sire and Loyal Rev to Grattan Loyal. After showing good form for two wins, seven seconds and a fourth in the 1945-46 season, Ingle Eelmer injured a hoof and she was unable to race last season. The mare has now grown a new ropf and, in her present condition, she should be of winning her way to the best classes. Maudeen was set a hard task. After starting smoothly from the 24 yards mark, she was forced to cover some extra ground in her endeavour to get to the front, and. once there, she did not get a chance to have a breather. In the circumstances her fourth was full of merit. An Exciting Race In the most thrilling finish of the day, Pre-Eminence won the Farewell Handicap by a narrow margin from Globe Direct. Pre-Eminence, which had finished in seventh place in the President’s Handicap earlier in the day, began smoothly, to follow Ann Scott and Golden Shadow with a furlong covered. At the end of the first half-mile, Ann Scott was leading from Pre-Eminence. Golden Shadow, Jack’s Son, Wade Lane, Globe Direct, Gamble King, Watcher, Plunder Bar. Gold Sheik, and Quite Haopy. Ann Scott led Pre-Eminence, Plunder Bar, Golden Shadow. Globe Direct, Maudeen. Gamble King, Jack’s Son, Turco, Loyal Peter, Knave of Diamonds, Local Gold and Follow Me Into the straight and the crowd roared with excitement as the field fanned across the track for the sprint home. Vigorously driven by J. Bryce, jun., Pre-Eminence stuck to his work in fine style to win from Globe Direct with Golden Shadow, Wade Lane, Jack’s Son, Ann Scott and Gamble King close up. Plunder Bar and Maudeen. the first and second favourites respectively, dismayed their supporters by breaking under pressure in the fast furlong and, in the mix-up which followed. Loyal Peter, Local Gold, and Follow Me fell. J. McLennan, the driver of Local Gold, was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital. where he was treated in the outpatients’ department. McLennan, who received injuries to his back, is to be X-rayed to-day.

Easy Win Java made light of his 48 yards handicap in the Introductory' Handicap, winning with the greatest of ease by two lengths from Sandy Duval. Java began quickly and with ,‘flve furlongs covered he was racing in .fourth place to Great Victor, Buncrana, and Port Bowen. McKendry soon took Java into the lead, and with four furlongs to go he was three lengths clear cf Buncrana, Great Victor, Port Bowen, Silver Volo, Bardia, Sandy Duval, and Sure Money. Sandy Duval and Bardia moved up to follow’ Java into the straight, but they could irake no impression on him over the last furlong. Sure Harvest Wins Paraded in the H. F. Nicoll Handicap later in the afternoon, Java was sent out 2-2 in the betting and he gave . another solid display to beat all but Sure Harvest. Acclamation, the favourite, ruined her chance when she failed to go • away correctly. When the field settled down Flying Scott was leading from Quartermaster. Sure Note, Songbird, Java, Blackdale, Sure Harvest, Strummer, Jimmy Scott, Calumella, Tall Timber, and Castigate. Flying Scott soon put a break of about 12 lengths on the field, but Java gradually reduced the gap to be within striking distance of him with five furlongs tc go. Once into the back straight, Java soon had Flying Scott beaten and with three furlongs to run these two were followed by Sure Harvest, Songbird, Golden Amazon, Calumella, Sure Note, and Jimmy Scott. Java led into the straight for the sprint home, but Sure Harvest finished very fast and he appeared to have something in reserve as he passed the post half a length clear of Java. Five lengths away Jimmy Scott was followed by Songbird, Calumella, Sure Note, Golden Amazon, and Strummer. A good performer in Southland, Sure Harvest has been lightly raced since joining W. J. Doyle’s team, but his performance on Saturday stamps him as a highclass trotter and he should now carry on to much better company. Finished Fast Ben Adam followed up his second placing to Maori Home in the Heathcote Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August 23 with a dashing display to win the Pacific_Jlandicap. Ben Adam, which conceded starts of up to 24 yards to the field, still had Loyal Chief, Certainty, Remlap, Technique, Lyndale, Renown’s Pride, Leonin, and Direct Medium in front of him with half a mile to go, but, or-.ce he was allowed to stretch out, he finished very fast to win by a length from Indigo. An aged gelding by Grattan Loyal from Colleen Wrack, Ben Adam is now at the top of his form and he should race well in the Methven Cup at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting this week.
