HIGHLAND DALE

EASY WIN AT ADDINGTON Highland Dale, which showed good form as a four-year-old last season to get three wins and four minor placings for Mr W. Flute, returned to the winning list with a sterling effort when he led all the way in the Seaview Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday. Driven by D C. Watts, Highland Dale looked like breaking just after the start, but Watts got him balanced quickly and, when the field settled down, he was leading from Mistvdale, Rural Lady, Becky Loyal, Surely, Tungsten Steel, True Comrade, and Proprietor. Highland Dale set a fast pace and he was not extended to run home three lengths clear of Mistydale in 2min 42 2-ssec from a 2min 53sec mark. A racy type. Highland Dale is by Sandydale from Myra Parrish, by Guy Parrish from Imperial Logan, by Logan Pointer from Imperial Princess, by Prince Imperial from Problem, by Specification. Highland Dale was paraded in sparkling condition by F. E. Upton, who recently took over the late R. J. Humphreys’ team. On this performance, Highland Dale should not be disgraced in much better company. The trotter, Mistydale, gave her usual solid display, and she should prove a profitable proposition for Mrs E. Berryman, who bought her last season from Mrs M. Nelson and S. Todd. The well-backed Good Review finished on well to earn third prize after having nine horses in front of him with half a mile to go. Good Review is a smart pacer, and he appeals as an early winner for R. H. Butterick. who trains him at

Rakaia. Jottings Sure Money, the second favourite for the Introductory Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, never appeared dangerous after breaking at the start. Vindictive Lady followed up her second placing to Keen Blade in the Royal Oak Handicap on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting with a win in the Whitford Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. An aged mare, Vindictive Lady is by Peter Bingen from Kohewan. Leading Man was always well back after beginning slowly in the Shirley Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Pimpernel, the winner of the second division of the Waiuta Trot Handicap at the Reefton Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, is owned by Dr. J. Wicken and C. Bennett. By Dilion Hall. Pimpernel is out of Azaleas, the dam of other winners including Arabis. Azure. Picotee, Tritoiha, and Certify. Trained at Washdyke / Darrington Hall gained his first success since being trained at Washdyko by W. A. Thomas when he beat Navy Queen by a neck in the Bowhill Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting meeting atr

Addington on Saturday. Quite Game was the first to show out, but he was soon passed by Pockey Book, which led at the end of the first half-mile from Navy Queen. Volo Audubon, Dandy Grattan. Quite Game, Bpnnv Scott, and Darrington Hdll. Darrington Hall improved his position to‘follow Volo Audubon and Pocket Book into the straight. Volo Audubon weakened over the last furlong, Darrington Hall carrying on to win from Navy Queen with Starshell close up in third place. A six-year-old gelding. Darrington Hall is by Dillon Hall from Fair Wave, which left other winners in Willow Bank, Sea Born, and Mountmeilick. A winner herself. Wave is by Waverley from Fair Lady, by Our Thorpe from Lady Rothsoon, by Harold Rothschild from Too Soon, by The Gossoon. Won Three Races Commander Scott, Fantom, and Bobby Burns, which are trained at Yaldhurst by G. B. NOble, for Mr J. R. McKenzie, were successful at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Nyallo Scott, which is held on lease by L. F. Berkett from Mr McKenzie, gave an outstanding performance to win the Ferguson Handicap after giving away starts of up to 96 yards to his field. With Nyallo Scott and Highland Fling eligible, Berkett holds a strong hand in the New Zealand Trotting Cup to be decided at Addington on November 1. Close Finish j The consistent Gantree, which finished in second place to Gay Knight in the Rakaia Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on September 13, at his last start, gained the decision by a head from Grattan Gold and Worthy Ace in a photo-finish for the Shirley Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Gantree had 10 horses in front of him in the early stages, and R. Young Was forced to cover some extra ground with him to have him handy to Lucky Potts, Dilbar, Gold Strike, and Grattan Gold with a mile to go. Gantree followed Grattan Gold and Dillonia Queen into the straight, and he finished straight and true under pressure to shade Grattan Gold a few yards from the winning post. A five-year-old son of Lucky Jack and Alice de Oro, Gantree appears to be above the average, and he should soon win again for Mr T. Baker, for whom he is trained at Addington by J. Purdon. Grattan Gold’s second placing was full of merit, and a winning turn for her should not be fai away. Now trained at Templeton by W. R. Butt for Messrs A. J. and I. Harris, Grattan Gold is by Grattan Loyal from Monetary, by Author Dillon from Franzie Pointer. Scotch Drift Though he has been a long time in getting on the winning list after a series of placings, Scotch Drift easily accounted for the field in the first division of the Ikamatua Trot at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting, High Stakes and the backmarker. Hardy Annual, filling the minor placings. Scotch Drift, who began smartly and led throughout, is a four-year-old gelding by U. Scott from Queen Pot, and is trained' at New Brighton by G. Cameron for Mr J. McDonald.

Promising Pacer One of the most promising pacers seen in action at the Reefton meeting was Goldina, a four-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from La Lilly, which is owned and trained at Addington by L. A. Williams. Goldina was always the leader in the second division of the Ikamatua Trot, and recording 3min 30sec for the mile and a half journey, soon had the remainder of the field in trouble. Kimono Girl made several attempts to overhaul the leader, but broke on each occasion, and Pampero, interfered with early, got up to take second money narrowly from Kimono Girl. Penalised 24 yards, GoWina won easilv in the Waiuta Trot, distancing a strung out field, with Artful and Chivlary the only pair to threaten any danger. Methven Trots, October 4 Owners and trainers are reminded that withdrawals close with the undersigned on Tuesday, at 5 p.m —J. F. Stone, Secretary. —Advt. South Canterbury J.C.
