PROSPECT FOR A.J.C. DERBY

CONDUCTOR TRACES TO MARTIAN’S DAM After his success in the Rosehill Guineas last Saturday, Conductor will come into favour for the A.J.C. Derby to be run at Randwick next Saturday. With the failure of last season's crack two-year-old, Temeraire, to stay, critics now regard the three year olds in Sydney as being of moderate class. However, on the score of breeding Conductor can be expected to stay the Derby distance. He is a bay colt by Marconigram from Silver Cloud by Silvius from Shepherd Princess by Shepherd King from Otterform by Multiform from Otterden, famous in New Zealand as the dam of Martian, Sungod and Boniform. As he traces to such a famous mare as Otterden, Conductor’s pedigree is of interest. When the late Mr G. G. Stead’s famous Yaldhurst Stud was dispersed in 1908. Otterden was sold in foal to Multiform to Mr William Brown, of New South Wales. She had been imported to New Zealand by Mr Stead in 1900 In foal to Martagon, the result being Martian, which was to earn lasting fame as a sire. During her stud career Otterden was mated with only four sires. After producing Martian in 1901 she was put to Multiform, and produced a high class colt in Sungod. The following year she produced a dead filly to Royal Artillery. Put to Multiform again she produced Boniform, which was unbeaten in a limited career as a racehorse, and was particularly successful as a sire. Boniform was followed by Sunglow and Founedon, also by Multiform, and in Australia, Otterden produced Foremost and Otterform to the same sire. To the Australian sire Maltster, Otterden produced Otterburn and Amadis. It is through Otterform that the line earned further distinction.

To Tressady, Otterforrti produced Otford, the dam of Manfred, winner of the A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbys, and runnerup in the Melbourne Cup. At the stud, Manfred sired the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner, The Trump. As a two-year-old, Conductor had only two races. At his first appearance he deadheated with Nickel in the second division of the A.J.C. March Nursery Handicap, ol six furlongs, run at Warwick Farm on March 8, and a week later he rah second in the Second Two-year-old Handicap at Rosehill. Last Saturday he beat the New Zealand-bred colt Karachi and the Canterbury Guineas winner, The Groom, rather easily after being well back in the field at the home turn. Conductor’s sire Marconigram has already sired an A.J.C. Derby winner in Reading and a Melbourne Cup winner in Marabou. With strong staying lines on his dam’s side also. Conductor may prove a formidable proposition in the Derby. Brilliant Trentham Filly One of the most brilliant of the two year olds in training at Trentham is Air Belle, which is trained by A. Goodman. Last Tuesday morning she gave further evidence of her brilliance when she ran three furlongs in 35 l-ssec. She is an effortless galloper and still appeared to have something in reserve when completing her task. She is to make her first appearance at the Masterton meeting next month. Air Belle is a brown filly by Airway from Te Marua by Croupier from Aroma by Arausio from Parearua by Demosthenes from Mangaroa by San Fran. She was purchased by her trainer at the last yearling sales at Trentham for 500 guineas, and comes from the same family as Whackie, Daljarrock, Blue Bonny and Soncy. The latter two were both two-year-old winners, Soncy winning the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. Formerly Trained at Hastings Lorenzo, an acceptor in the Clarendon Hack Handicap at Wingatui to-day, was formerly trained at Hastings by P. Atkins and is now in E. J. Burns’s team at Washdyke. He is a five-year-old gelding by II Duce from Ate by Lord Quex frorfi Squeeze. The latter, a sister to Cuddle, was by Psychology from the Martian mare Caress. Ate is a sister to Prudent Prince, which won several races when trained at Riccarton. Lorenzo is still a maiden, and in .10 starts last season registered two seconds and two thirds. He was unplaced in his two appearances at Hastings last month. Not An Acceptor s Waveloch figured as an acceptor in the Trial Handicap at Wingatui to-day, but her trainer, M. J. Wadley, says that she was not accepted for. Waveloch is a three-year-old brown filly by Balloch from Flying Wave by Flying Prince from Wild Sea by Catmint. In her races to date, Waveloch has been slow to find her feet, and she is to be tried over more ground. Eased Up After Successes The Trentham-trained Stellar, winner of the Wanganui Debutante Stakes and the Carterton Juvenile Stakes at her last appearances to date, has had an easy time since winning the latter race. She has thrived since her let. up, and appears to be settling down. Her next appearance will be in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham ' s . ' offer to Trainer The Wingatiit Vetter, J - Eankhurst, has been offered;» .‘position as private trainer for a North island owner, but has not yet decided whether he will .accept the offer.
