GREYMOUTH JOCKEY CLUB

COMMITTEE ELECTED BY BALLOT The Greymouth Jockey Club made a loss of less than £lOO on last year’s working, said the chairman (Mr C. L. Kettle) at the annual meeting on Thursday evening. The balance-sheet showed assets totalling £4895 and a loss on the year of £76 4s sd. Expenditure for the year amounted to £15.027, the major items being £6448 for taxation and £5958 for stakes. Referring to the difficulties faced by racing clubs on the West Coast, Mr Kettle said that the heavy taxation was felt very much by the smaller clubs, and heavy expense was involved in conducting meetings. Mr T. E. Coates, who retired from the position of president of the club, after 28 years in office, was elected a life member, *a tribute to his work being paid by the new president (Mr J. W. Hannan), who was the’only nominee for the position.

Considerable interest was taken in the election of the committee, 17 nominations being received for the 12 vacancies. On a ballot 'being taken, the following were elected: —Messrs H. Moore, C. L. Kettle, T. E. Coates, F. Costello, H. Hall, L. S. Robertson, G. Blair, F. Freitas, A. J. Wilson, D. R. Dowell, C. G. McKechnie, and J. P. Low. The unsuccessful candidates were Messrs A. Beban, B.
