AFTERNOON PARTY

£2» RAISED At the invitation of Mrs T. F. Gibson, members of the Christchurch Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society held their annual book and coin party at her home, “Ashbrook,” Fendalton, yesterday. A big pile of magazines and more than 150 books for the Seamen’s Institute in Lyttelton and for libraries aboard ships were received from the many guests, and also the sum of £2O in donations.

The president of the guild (Mrs G. W. C. Smithson), in expressing pleasure at the good attendance, emphasised the need of the society’s work in peace as well as in war. New Zealand, she said, was dependent on seamen for transport of goods to and from the Dominion, and ladies’ guilds, with the board of directors of the seamen’s institutes, did all they could for their welfare and comfort. She appealed for new members to help in this work.

A pleasant musical programme was provided by Mrs F. Nelson Kerr and Mrs Colin Hart (songs) and Mrs R. S. Storie and Mrs H. Reeve (accompaniments). At a small flower stall brisk business was done. After tea had been served. Miss B. L. Sanders, on behalf of the guild, thanked Mrs Gibson for her hospitality and the artists for providing the musical programme.
