WORK OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
“ AIMS NOT .UNDERSTOOD BY PUBLIC” “People think we are against the Government;” said Mr H. C. Hurst, retiring president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, at the 88th annual meeting last evening, when referring to the aims and objects of the organisation. “We are not against any Government,” he added. “We are only out to protect industry, commerce, and the farmers.” Mr Hurst mentioned criticism of the Chamber of Commerce by the general public, and said the trouble was that the public did not know what the chamber’s aims were. The aims and objects were the promotion apd protection of the commercial, industrial, agricultural, and pastoral interests of Canterbury and New Zealand; the fostering and development of the primary and secondary industries of the province and the Dominion, and consideration of all questions connected with the economic and commercial life of the province and the country, including the trade relations of New Zealand with foreign countries and other parts of the British Empire.
