CHELMSFORD STAKES TO PROCTOR
BOOKMAKERS BIG WINNERS AT RANDWICK (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 14. In one of the blackest days for punters ever, known at Randwick, bookmakers won an estimated sum of £150,000 from the public yesterday. The only successful favourite was Proctor, which won the Chelmsford Stakes easily from a disappointing field. He moved in from second to last at the half.-mile, caught the leaders a furlong from home, and then sprinted away. Though only six started, the brilliant three-year-old, Temeraire, finished out of a place. He lea all the way to the leger. but failed in his finishing run, and let other horses in Good Idea and Two Grand snatch the minor placings. Temeraire will run in the A.J.C. Derby, but not in the Melbourne Cup. Huamight, which ran last at Canterbury the previous week, won the Spring Handicap with eese. He was in last position for most of the race, but came through with a determined run at the finish. Many punters started a demonstration after the race and the stewards have commenced a "retrospective inquiry,” which is the first recalled by racing mten for many years. The running of the Tramway Handicap was marred when the well favoured Prince Consort dropped dead in the straight, when making what might have been a winning run. The cause of his death was a ruptured blood vessel in the heart. Clipper, which had not won a race for 13/ months, took the decision by a long head from Earl Pentheus, defeating a crack Epsom field at the longest odds of the day. Tahmoor led for most of the distance but could not stay. Results:— TRAMWAY HANDICAP, of £800; seven furlongs.—CLlPPEß 7-0 A. Podmore 1; Earl Pentheus 8-4 G. Podmore 2; Tahmoor 8-3 N. McGrowdie 3.
