OPEN SPRINT TO ALL QUALITY
ALL-THE-WAY WIN The favourites fared badly in the Spring Handicap at Ashburton cn Saturday, an outside fancy in All Quality surprising by an end-to-end victory. All Quality won her way out of hack company at Oamaru last March and this was her first success in nine attempts in open company. Clyde Bridge finished fast into second place, and ran All Quality to half a length. Lcvemorn, having her first race since January 2, made a surprisingly forward showing for third. Bruce, Cipher, Double Cross and Flyifig Hawke were slow away. All Quality Showing out first from Lexia, Revolte, Lovemorn, and Indian Dawn. Lexia had joined All Quality at the five furlongs and the pair led round to the straight from Lovemorn, Cellow Dene, Clyde Bridge, and Cipher, which had moved up fast. Lexia began to give ground early in the run home, and at the furlong All Quality was clear of Lovemoru Clyde Bridge and Chellow Dene. Although Clyde Bridge finished fast on the inner, All Quality held on solidly to win by half a length. Lovemorn was four lengths back in third place and just held off Indian Dawn, which finished very fast into fourth. Bruce, also finishing fast, was fifth, with Hansel and Cipher close up, clear of Chellow Dene, Double Cross, and Revolte. Lexia lost her rider, R. Harrison, just inside ihe final furlong. Harrison lost a stirrup iron at the start and fell off when he lost the other m the straight. Fading Light’s First Win Fading Light had her first win when she easily heat a short-priced favourite in Wane by four lengths, in the County Hack Hurdles. Fading Light was always well placed in the running, and moved up to join Wane turning for home. They went into the last hurdle together, but Wane screwed badly and Fading Light had no difficulty in drawing away over the last furlong. The Crofter soon w'orked his way to the front and passing the stands led from Money Bird and Wane, with Dinky Di and Fading Light following closely, then Pedantic, just clear of Solver, Silverstrcam, Spanish Main, Real Night, and Sir Saladin. At the mile post The Crofter was three lengths clear of Wane with two lengths to Fading Light and Moneybird. Solver fell and brought down Silverstream and Sir Saladin was also eliminated. Wane closed on The Crofter down the back, but The Crofter fell at the five furlongs and Wane was left in front, just clear of Fading Light with two lengths to Pedantic, Money Bird, Spanish Main, and Dinky Di following at intervals. There was no change until the turn into the straight where Fading Light drew up to Wane. The latter nearly dislodged his rider at the last hurdle, and Pedantic lost his rider, who, however, landed on his feet and retained the reins. Wane did not look like beating Fading Light in the run home, and when he was eased near the post, Spanish Main, finishing on, got within a head of him. Money Bird was a poor fourth, with Dinky Di and Real Night the only others to complete the course.
Favourite Wins Easily Getting into his stride more quickly than he did in his first two races at Riccarton, the favourite, Broie, was never further back than third in the first division of the Novice Stakes and won easily by two lengths from Primitive, which just got up to head off Count Minerva for second after running greenly. Count Minerva was in second place most of the way, and, like Primitive, made an encouraging showing Agenda, Count Minerva, Broie. Primitive, and Renege began best and Agenda made the running round to the straight from Count Minerva and Broie, which were clear of Primitive, with Renege, Gay Quest, Pacific Edition, and Waveloch most prominent of the others. Broie headed Agenda early in the run home, and’at the furlong had charge from Count Minerva. It was then only necessary for his rider to keep him going to win by twb lengths. Primitive ran about a little in the straight, but got up to beat Count Minerva for second by a head. Agenda weakened into fourth place. Then came Renege, Morning Watch, and Lodestar, with gaps to Miss Mahatma. Grey Fell, and Wavelock. Wide Range Too Good Wide Range outclassed the opposition in the second division of the Novice Stakes and had the race won some distance from the post. The minor place-getters, Leadership and Faultrosa, were always prominent. Strathconan began smartly and soon led from Faultrosa, Leadership, and Wide Range. Round the top turn Strathconan had drawn out to a four lengths’ lead from Faultrosa and Leadership with Wide Range and Jolyon next, Our Style and Beau Canard being most prominent of the others. Strathconan led into the straight from Leadership and Faultrosa, with Wide Range making up ground. Wide Range had the measure of Strathconan at the distance, and was not troubled to win by three lengths. In a good finish for the minor places. Leadership held on to beat Faultrosa by r head with a similar margin to Jolyon, which finished well over the last furlong. Saieda was next and then came Strathconan. Glen Cona. and Beau Canard. Young John’s Solid Finish
Young John held on solidly in the run home .to win the Penscroft Hack Handicap. though he might have had a more difficult task had the apprentice rider, I. McClure, been able to ride Pacific Star out properly. McClure was suffering from the effects of a kick from Lady Vellum at the barrier. The favourite, Deficiency, was third after getting none the best of the running. Bannockburn, Sword Dancer and Precipitate were the smartest out, and Bannockburn was soon making the pace from Royal Flash and Precipitate with Pacific Star and Young John next, followed by Magnaform, Dowlair, and Deficiency. Round to the home turn Royal Flash joined Bannockburn, and Young John and Foreign Ways improved their positions. Young John quickly ran past Bannockburn and Royal Flash once the field straightened up, and at the distance had charge from Royal Flash,.Pacific Star, Deficiency, Dowlair, and Magnaform. Young John finished on solidly to win by half a length from Pacific Star, which finished fast into second place. Deficiency xVas another length and a half back with a len'gth to Royal Flash. Then came Dowlair, Magnaform, and Bay Fort, with Foreign Ways heading the rest. Near the five furlongs, P. H. Jones, the rider of Blue Hussar, had a nasty fall when his mount got on the heels of Quick Lunch, which was going back through the field. Geraldine R.C.
