AIR BASE FOR CHRISTCHURCH
.Sir,—l would like to comment on the absurdity of advocating Harewood as the South Island’s overseas air base, when the policy of the Empire airlines is to use flying boats, as has been clearly stated by Air Marshal Williams. Some six new flying boats have just been ordered, which will probably last for the next 10 years. Why do we not face facts and provide an air base for flying boats in the Estaury which Nature has made for us ana which only needs developing to provide for a future aerodrome for land machines. This could be made at the too of the eastury from the dredgings, and so in 10 years' time Christchurch could be made right up to date, with an air base for flying boats and an aerodrome for land machines within close proximity to the city.—Yours, etc.. S. W. HICKMOTT. September 11, 1947.
