YOUNd SEAMEN TRAINED IN BELLONA “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, September 5. Young seamen, many of them "fresh from the recruit divisions of the naval training establishment at Motuihi, gained their first sea experience during a two months’ Pacific cruise of H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona. The ship visited the Kermadecs, Fiji, the Ellice Islands, Rotomah, and the Friendly Group. ” Several cases of mumps prevented the sailors from going ashore at Funafuti, where the Government headquarters of the Ellice Group are situated. However, the Bellona took over a small uninhabited island in the lagoon, established the navigating officer as its resident governor, set up a small permanent shore party, known popularly as the “natives,” and created its own preserve for recreation. Off duty ratings spent their afternoons on "he island, where a cafeteria was established, and hardier ones slept Ashore in ’ tents erected among the palms.
