HELP FOR THE SICK
MOVEMENT IN AUCKLAND Auckland women are to be asked to volunteer help for sick persons who cannot gain admission to hospitals. An appeal for support in this urgent matter was made by Mrs A. K. North, secretary of the women’s committee of the National Council of Churches, at a meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women. It was stated tr.a« the National Council of Churches had made a start on a service of this sort. Already there were some women volunteers who were helping sick people by sitting with them at home, to relieve the persons who normally attended them, and by shopping for them. At present only elderly people were being helped, but it was hoped that the service would be extended. The Mayoress of Auckland (Mrs J. A. C. AUum) is anxious to obtain the support of women’s organisations. The district nursss are said to be very anxious about the plight of their patients. It is estimated that 3000 patients are awaiting admission to hospitals in Auckland. The National Council of Women has referred the matter to its constituent bodies for consideration.
