RALLY FOR MISS OLGA PURVES

Next Tuesday, trade union organisations in the Addington Railway Workshops would inaugurate their campaign in support of Miss Olga Purves, one of the five Christchurch entrants in the Miss New Zealand contest, said the executive director of the contest (Mr K. W. Kilpatrick), last evening. Trade union and other bodies represented at the workshops had adopted Miss Purves for the rest of the campaign, he said. The workshops campaign would be launched with a lunch-hour rally by the employees, when Miss Purves would be present, to be introduced to the men. The manager of the workshops (Mr J. King) was chairman of the supporting committee, said Mr Kilpatrick, and the workshops choir and band would entertain the rally with songs and music. Until October, when the campaign ended, the supporting committee at the workshops would organise dances to raise funds lor Mifc Purves, “We hope that we may get similar support from the other workshops in the main centres,” said Mr Kilpatrick, “and the support of those trade unions which are represented at the Addington workshops. “We would like to see more organisations puttin'* up candidates for the contest,” he said. So far, only three of the Christchurch applicants had been put forward by organisations. Miss Purves had already paid in £lOO to the accounts of the Royal Society of St. George. No details had been arranged for the tour and he thought that no announcement would be made until the selection was made, so that the successful applicant could arrange to visit places in the United Kingdom that had some particular or family interest for her, said Mr Kilpatrick. The tour would include a leisurely trip through Canada, as well as the comprehensive British itinerary. “The Royal Society in London is becoming embarrassed by the number of offers it has received from people wishing to offer hospitality to Miss New Zealand when she arrives,” said Mr Kilpatrick
