ROYAL WEDDING IN LONDON
GENERAL SMUTS WILL ATTEND (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, September 4. The Prime Minister (Mr Attlee) has sent the Dominion Prime Ministers a personal letter saying he hopes that they will accept invitations to attend the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, so that their presence in London will provide an opportunity for full-scale talks on all Commonwealth questions early in December. . A message from Pretoria to-day says that the South African Prime Minister (General Jan Smuts) has accepted the invitation to attend the wedding. A message from Canberra says that the Commonwealth Government, will send Princess Elizabeth a substantial present of an “essentially Australian character” for her wedding on November 20. The Federal Cabinet has several gifts under consideration, but a decision has not yet been made. It was stated that the present would be a household article of Australian material. If possible the Minister of External Affairs (Dr. H. V. Evatt) will represent Australia at the weddinff.
