EDGE HILL SEAT
BRITISH BYELECTION CANDIDATES (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 27. Candidates announced for the Edge Hill Division of the Liverpool byelection are:— Labour.—A. J- Irvine, a barrister and solicitor, a former president of the Oxford Union and a former unsuccessful Liberal candidateConservative—Reginald Bevins, who, at 26, was qpe of the youngest members of th& Liverpool City Council. Liberal.—Sir Hubert Young, formerly Governor of Nyasaland and several other colonial territories. Independent Labour-—David Gibson, a member of the Glasgow City Council. Independent.—C. Foster, a Wallasey newsagent. There may also be a sixth candidate, Mr G E. Williams, representing the British People’s Party. The contest between Mr Irvine and Mr Bevins is likely to be bitter because Mr Beyins, who was originally elected to the Liverpool City Council as a Labour nominee, disagreed with the party policy in 1938 and joined the Conservatives.
