DOMINIONS’ AID TO BRITAIN
APPRECIATION OF GENEROSITY
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, August 27. "The magnificent generosity of the Dominions has shown itself on countless occasions in the past, but we must admit we have taken it too often for granted,” says the “News Chronicle” in a leading article headed: “Say Thank You.” "In two great wars the Dominions have poured out their wealth in men and supplies in the common fight for survival. Perhaps it was because the fight was one in which they stood to gain or lose as much' as we did that we accepted their help with gratitude, but without undue surprise. To-day it is father different. The Dominions could conceivably make shift for themselves in peace time without bothering overmuch with the plight of these small islands. Such a policy would be short-sighted, but we must remember that there is more than mere economic compulsion behind the aid the Dominions are offering.” After reviewing the extent of the aid already by the Dominions the article says that the British people deeply desire to say “thank you” and are by no means satisfied that the dispatch of polite notes from Whitehall is an adequate way of doing it. It suggests that the British Government should • show more imagination in its- response and send a Cabinet Minister to the Dominion capitals, first to tell the Dominions how grateful the British people are for their help, and, second to discuss the practical details of their plans.
