TEMPLE STAR AND CONCEIT

LIKELY FAVOURITES FOR TROTTING STAKES

Temple Star and Conceit, which will start 'off the scratch mark with Bashaw, Bold Salute, and Stray Shot in the Addington Trotting Stakes at the New Zealand Meropolitan' Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, are both promising youngsters and they should carry solid support. At his only start last season. Temple Star outclassed the field in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at the Easter meeting at Addington, winning without being extended by three lengths from Conceit, with Pat Review and Stray Shot in the minor places, A well-grown gelding by Josedale Dictator from Farida, Temple Star should eventually take high honours for his owher-trainer, L. F. Berkett.

A son of Desmond’s Pride and Mersa Matruh, Conceit’s placings last season included a third to Acclamation and Sally Horner in the first division of the Stewards’ Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on May 24. Conceit, which is now trained at Russley by M. Holmes for Mr H. Stafford, gave an encouraging performance to finish in fourth place to Golder. Amazon, Teddy Gregg, and Not Quite, in his heat at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders' Association’s matinee meeting at Addington on August 19 and he should prove hard to beat this week.

Eraeval, Flame, High Stakes, Ipso Facto, and Sandy Duval will start from tlje 36yds mark and of these, Sandy Duval makes most appeal. A bold trotter by -Quite Sure from Roydon’s Gift, Sandy Duval’s record includes a fine performance to win the Addington Trotting Stakes from Beverley Volo at the national meeting last year. Acclamation and Great Venture are liandicapped to give away starts of 60 yards. Great Venture raced at the matinee meeting at Addington recently, when he showed an inclination to pace, and he should be safely held by his comarker. A well-bred mare by the champion trotter, Certissimus, from a good performer in Raclaim, Acclamation secured a win and two minor placings in her last four starts last season, her win being at Addington on May 24 when she beat Sally Horner by a length and a half after giving her 48 yards start in the Stewards’ Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting. Acclamation is a smart trotter and she looks the most likely to trouble Temple Sar and Conceit at the finish of the Trotting Stakes on Saturday.

Jottings Because of rain, the main track at Addington was not open yesterday morning and all work was done on the small training track, which provided good going. The Addington Trotting Stakes candidate, High Stakes, which is trained at Papanui by A. Leggett, looked well when he worked at Addington yesterday morning. Razzle is back m work in D. A. Withers's team at Addington. Mr T. Fairbairn, Hornby, purchased a filly by Quite .Sure from Sutherlands, for 20 guineas, at the sale Of trotting stock yesterday. E. O’Fee’s team at Amberley includes Red Herring and a filly by Josedale Dictator from a Petereta mare.

Rey Stone, a mare by Native Rey from Ccpplestone. was purchased at auction yesterday by Mr C. Smith, Winchmore. D. Townley is working a promising two-year-old gelding by Casanova from a Rey de Oro mare.

Likely Type Sure Rey, which was making his first appearance since being- trained at Takanini by F, J. Smith, raced well at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, to finish a head behind Marshall Ney in the second division of the Hikutaia Handicap. A five-year-old gelding. Sure Rey, which recorded nine minor piacings last season, is by Quite Sure from Rey Direct, the dam of some good performers in Irish Dawn, Eileen Grattan. Sister Kay, and Logan Rey. A Rey de Oro mare, Rey Direct is out of Trixie Logan, by Logan Pointer from Trixie Mac, by General Mac from the Prince Imperial mare. Impetus. Recovering Integrity has been suffering from a cold and. he was unable to take his place in the fields for the free-for-all events at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting. Integrity is now making a good recovery and his owner-trainer, V. Deeming, hopes to give him a race over a sprint distance at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on September 6. Good Effort

Mountmellick gave a good display from the 24 yards mark in the Islington Handicap at Addington on Saturday to finish in fourth place to Maudeen. Notus, and Leonin. and, on that performance, he may prove hard to beat in the Improvers' Handicap this week. Driven by his trainer, G. S. Smith, Mountmellick had 13 horses in front of him when the field settled down and he still had Maudeen, Expensive, Coral Princess. Symetra, Starshell. Horatio Nelson, Baby Grand, Notus, Hal Derby, Sir Raymond, and Right Royal in front of him with four furlongs to go. Mountmellick stayed on well over the concluding stages and his effort indicates that he has bright prospects this season. The winner of the Timaru Trotting Cup at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on March 8. Mountmellick is an aged gelding by Arion Axworthy from Fair Wave, which left other winners in Willow Bank and Sea Born.

Broke at the Start The three-year-old gelding, British Machine, which was sent out favourite for the Kopu Handicap at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, broke at the start, but once he settled down he showed a lot of speed to take the lead and open up a big gap on his field. British Machine commenced to tire with a mile covered, and he was not knocked about in the run home. A speedy! son of Auto Machine, British Machine'

should soon win a race for Mr S. Gudsell.

May Be a Bargain Mr W. B. Somerville, Kelso, the owner of a smart pacer in Loyal Peter, purchased a four-year-old gelding by Grattan Loyal from Queen Wrack for 22}gns at H. Matson and Company’s sale of trotting stock at Addington yesterday. An angular gelding, the youngster is to be turned out on Mr Kelso’s farm for about 12 months, and he may prove a bargain when he is eventually put into work, as he is a half-brother to Democrat, which won two races at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Queen Wrack, the dam of the gelding, is by Wrack from Entice, by Bribery from a General Lincoln mare, which was out of a mare by the thoroughbred horse Stepniak. Sprayman’s Prospects Sprayman impressed in the Speedway Handicap of two miles at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday, when he jumped out smartly and set the pace until a few yards off the winning post, where he was just shaded by Worthy Gold and Radical. A smart pacer. Sprayman should be suited by the mile and five furlongs journey in the Advance Handicap on Saturday, and he may prove capable of leading all the way. Deaths Recorded

The deaths of the following horses were recorded at the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association on Friday night:—Andromeda, Baby Joan, Castlerock, Chain Lightning, Chaperon, Chief Power, Clydella, Co-Director, Doris Derby, El Direct, Eldorado, Estralita. Frisky Bill, Golden Morn, Great Mountain, Haven, Helen Carbine, Joanese, Kaikatea, Kentucky Princess, Military Maid, Orphan Bingen, Renetta Dillon, Springfield Lady; Stock Exchange. Suspense, Treasure Bond, Waitaki Girl, War Guard.

May Race Well Navigate, a winner at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s matinee meeting at Addington on August 19, was not disgraced when he was beaten out of the monfey in the Lightning Free-for-all at Addington on Saturday. An aged gelding by Sandydale from a smart mare in Rocks Ahead, Navigate should be improved by the race and he may show up from the 24 yards mark in the National Handicap this week. From a Good Family

Besides Sure Money and Play Safe, J. Slack’s team at Addington includes Ada Superior, which is by U. Scott from a sister to Queen Ayesha, the dam of Highland Fling. Queen Ayesha, which was bred by Mrs K. Bare, is by the imported Frank Worthy from Royal Empress. Poor Lot The trotters at the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday were a poor lot. The little fancied Our Jackie returned his supporters a dividend of more than half a century when he won the Parawai Handicap by half the length of the straight. Our Jackie appeared as the likely winner of the Twohill Memorial Handicap later in the day, but he broke with six furlongs to go and lost a lot of ground. Although he made up his handicap to take the lead again. Our Jackie was outstayed in the sprint home by Legionnaire, which trotted solidly all the way. The rest of the field finished a long way back.
