RUGBY FOOTBALL

INVITATION TO OTAGO REFEREE CONTROL OF SOUTHLANDCANTERBURY MATCH “In view of the attitude of the Otago Rugby Union regarding the appointment of outside referees for Ranfurly Shield games, I think we should extend an invitation to the Otago Union to appoint a referee «for one of our representative games this year,” said Mr R. R. Masters, at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. “Otago referees will be denied the opportunity of refereeing games in Dunedin this season. This union is in sympathy with Otago Union regarding the appointment of outside referees for Ranfurly Shield matches, but we would nqt like to deny Otago referees the privilege of controlling representative fixtures.” Mr R. W. Blazey said that Canterbury’s “big five” had to have their chance of controlling some of the games here, but he considered that an invitation could be extended to an Otago referee for one of the matches.

All agreed with what Mr Masters had said, said the president (Mr V. L. Jensen). The Canterbury Union would be happy to have an Otago referee for a match on Lancaster Park, and it would mean that Otago referees were not “frozen out” of representative games. It was then agreed on the motion of Mr Masters to invite an Otago referee to control the game between Canterbury and Southland at Lancaster Park on September 20.

Replying to a complaint by the Kaiapoi Club that on two occasions when the country team was scheduled to meet Albion in the under 16 grade in town, the Albion team had not turned up, the Albion Club advised that some of its players had not appeared. It was then too late to advise the Kaiapoi Club. It was decided to send a copy of the letter to the Kaiapoi Club.

An application from the Canterbury Rugby Referees’ Association for a grant to entertain visiting kindred associations was referred to the. finance committee. Lighted Training Ground “Street lights now come on in broad-day-light at 6 o’clock, yet we are denied lights for training grounds,” said Mr W. Mikkelson. He suggested that a further application be made for lighted grounds for training. Mr Jensen said that as an application made about 10 days ago had been refused, further representations were not likely to receive favourable consideration. The Referees’ Association asked that the time of starting for its game against the Otago Referees’ Association on September 6 be altered from noon to 1.15 p.m. It was stated in a letter that the Otago team would be travelling all night, and that difficulty would be experienced in securing an early meal at a hotel. Mr Blazey said it would be difficult to alter the time. The 1.15 game was between Canterbury Colts and a combined University Colleges side. As there were seven fixtures set down for Lancaster Park that day, he thought that the referees might agree to play at the Show Grounds at 1.15 p.m. It was decided to advise the Referees’ Association that if it desired the game to be played at Lancaster Park the original starting time w’ould remain unaltered. Otherwise, the game could be played at the Show Grounds. The Sydenham and Albion clubs were each fined one competition point for breaches union’s rules in an underage grade.

For the competitions committee, Mr Blazey reported that eight under-age and under-weight grades had been concluded. In the under 18 A section, Technical Old Boys won with 151 points and Papanui Technical Old Boys was second with 11} points. The under 18 B section was held in abeyance as the results of two fixtures were not known. Other results were:—under 17: Marist 13 points, Sydenham 11. Under 16: High School Old Boys 14} points, Kaiapoi 14. Under Bst 71b: Technical Old Boys 12 points, High School Old Boys A B}. Under 7st 71b: Sydenham 13 points, Technical Old Boys A 11}.
