VIVIAN CUP GAMES HORNBY BEATS SYDENHAM When the fifth round of the Canterbury Rugby League Vivian Cup competition was played on Saturday, Hornby, for the second time .this season, beat the strong Sydenham thirteen. Results were:— Hornby 13, Sydenham 8. Prebbleton 16, Riccarton 13. Linwood 18, Christchurch 13. Add.ngton 34, Papanui 8. Points in the competition are as' follows:—Hornby 10, Christchurch 6, Sydenham 6, Rakaia 5. PrebMeton 5, Riccarton 2, Addington 2, Papanui 2. Linwood 2. HORNBY v. SYDENHAM Solid forward play, supported by some brilliant individual efforts by the backs, enabled Hornby to beat Sydenham at Athletic Park by 13 points to 8. The game was evenly contested and was full of interest, although* the fast following up and hard tackling of the Hornby side prevented Sydenham from producing their usual spectacular back movements. The Hornby forwards played one of their best games of the season and deserve credit for the tireless way in which they kept on the ball throughout the game. In the first half, eaph side attacked in turn, with Hornby holding a slight advantage territorially, although Sydenham ltd by 8 points to 5 at half-time. Sydenham’s points came from tries scored by J. O’Halloran and N. Stackhouse, M. Noonan converting one try. O’Halloran, the first five-eighths, made a brilliant run from near his own goal line to gain 60 yards and almost immediately received the ball from a scrum to cut through neatly and score under the posts. O’Halloran, although more subdued than usual, made some good openings and was the best of the Sydenham backs. Early in the second spell, E. Lewis, second five-eighths, scored an excellent try for Hornby when he cut through the defence from 15 yards out to score under the posts. Lewis converted his own try. In the second half, Hornby used the strong wind to advantage, and kicked with judgment. Tries were scored for Hornby by C. Kenworthy after good work by the forwards, and L. Lanauze, who received the ball from K. Henry, the full-back, after Henry had made an excellent run. Lewis converted one try. Henry throughout the game handled and kicked well. He varied his play by running his backs into position, and altogether played first-class football. In a well-balanced Hornby pack. W. Bainbridge was outstandng for following up and good all-round play. Other Hornby forwards who worked hard were Kenworthy and M. Pomare. J. Duke and K. Andrews played well in the Sydenham forwards but did not get much opportunity to play their usual gamp in the open. With Henry, D. Davis and Lewis were the best of the Hornby backs. The referee was Mr R. Barbarel. PREBBLETON V. RICCARTON At Riccarton Domain, Prebbleton beat Riccarton by 16 points to 13 after a good exhibition of fast and open football. In the first spell both sides staged some excellent movements, but Prebbleton showed superior combination and led by 13 points tc 3 at half-time. Riccarton recovered well in the second spell, and after some firstclass back play drew level, but Prebbleton attacked strongly towards the end of the game and after some solid forward play scored the winning try. Tries were scored for Prebbleton by 7 R. Jordan, D. Donaldson, and T. Allum. V. Arps converted two tries. For Riccarton, W. Adams, C. Clark, and R. Kearney scored tries, two of which were converted by R. Syme. The referee was Mr T. Wellsmore. ADDINGTON V. PAPANUI Although playing two men short in the forwards, Addington beat Papanui, at Papanui Domain, by 34 points to 8. Much of the play was ragged, although the game was played at a brisk pace. The handling of both teams was at times poor, and some promising movements broke down when passes were dropped. The four Addington forwards played good football and at every opportunity handed the ball to their backs, who were able to maintain a consistent attack. Addington had a definite advantage and it was not until the concluding stages of the game that Papanui returned to the attack to score two tries. E. Falgar, the Addington second five-eighths, made some neat openings and scored two good tries. Tries were also scored for Addington by Farrell, Price (2), Murray, and Berry (2). Massey converted three tries and Ward two. Joyce scored two tries for Papanui, one of which was converted by M. Clinton. * The referee was Mr H. Hamburger. LINWOOD V. CHRISTCHURCH With neither side at full strength, Linwood beat Christchurch in -a rather ragged game at Sydenham Park. Linwood started with great dash and scored two converted tries in the first 20 minutes. , The side then lapsed, and Christchurch scored two tries, one converted, to make the score at half-time 10- to 8. In the second half, playing against the wind, the Linwood forwards took charge of the game. Their loose rushes were too solid for Christchurch to cope with, and had it not been for some solid defence by some of the Christchurch hacks, the score would have been much greater in Linwood’s favour. Outstanding among Linwood’s forwards were K. and J. Smith and J. Berry, who played with great dash. L. E. Brown, Linwood’s first five-eighths, was the best back on the ground, and ‘ made some fine breaks. He also defended very soundly. Best of the other backs were Humphries and Nuttall. Easily the best Christchurch forward was O’Brien, who was in the thick of things throughout. The other Christchurch forwards appeared sluggish in' comparison. D. George and Wilson were the best Christchurch backs, who sadly missed the generalship of K. Cox. Humphries (2), Berry, and Brown scored tries for Linwood, three of which Humphries converted. For Christchurch, O’Keefe and George (tries) and Wilson and Dunn (conversions) were the scorers. Referee: Mr E. Barbarel.
