TABLE TENNIS
CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS The finals of the Canterbury table tennis championships were held on Satuiday. In the men’s singles event last year’s winner, J. J. Borough, retained his title from T. D. R. Flint/ in a thrilling contest. In the women’s singles Miss A. Peppier retained her title by defeating her sister, Mrs M. Dennis, in a close contest. These two players had little difficulty in retaining their women’s doubles title. In addition, Mrs M. Dennis and D. I. Gray retained the mixed doubles title in an interesting match with Miss A. Peppier and J. J. Borough. Gray’s speedy backhand shots were the deciding factors. The men’s doubles title was won by Borough and J. M. Philpott from A. D. Brown and D. Meier in four sets in which Philpott’s fast angular drives were difficult to cope with. Results:— Men’s Singles.—Semi-final; T. Dt R.
Flint beat A. R. Algie, 21-9, 21-13, 21-18. Final: J. J. Borough beat T. D. R. Flint 15-21, 17-21, 21-18, 21-12, 21-19.
Men’s Doubles.—Final: J. J. Borough and J. M. Philpott beat A. D. Brown and D. Meier 24-22, 15-21, 21-18. 21-9.
Women’s Singles.—Final: Miss A. Peppier beat Mrs M. Dennis 21-17, 21-18. Women’s Doubles.—Final: Miss A. Peppier and Mrs M. Dennis beat Miss F. Rooney and Miss E. Feely 21-19, 21-15.
Mixed Doubles.—Semi-final: D. I. Gray and Mrs M. Dennis beat H. Barton and Miss J. Derbridge, 21-14, 21-14. Final: Gray and Mrs Dennis beat Borough and Miss Peppier 21-17, 16-21, 21-18. Boys’ Singles.—Final: N. McGillivray beat J. A. Harliwich 21-17, 21-6. Girls’ Singles.—Final: Miss B. Packwood beat Miss D. Senior. 21-10. 21-17.
