ELECTRICITY SHORTAGE
Sir, —Tell Mr Andrews we’ll help him save some more electricity, that is, when we can get some coal. We have an incinerator which heats ';the water and kitchenette, but we want fuel. Until we get it we are going to use our electric heater and waterheater just when we want to. If they make more compulsory cuts, then ours will be turned off, too; but on they go again as the power is turned on. Mr J. L. Hay was going to do the best he could for us, according to the papers, about the coal supply, if we saved voluntarily. We have paid for two lots, the first last May, but no coal yet. What can Mr Hay do about it? — Yours, etc., . TURN ON THE HEAT. August 1, 1947. [Mr J. L. Hay, when this letter was referred to him, said that the Public Relations Officer (Mr T. H. Langford) had taken active steps in pressing the city’s claims for more coal at the beginning of the shortage. Mr Langford now believed that more coal was available for Christchurch.]
