YOUNG MAN DROWNED

COLLAPSE OF SWING BRIDGE (PA.) AUCKLAND, August 4. A young man was drowned when he fell from a swing footbridge into the Upper Waiwera stream on Sunday evening. He was Roy Henry Joyce, aged 22. farmer, of Waiwera. Mr Joyce, with his mother and father, was crossing a bridge on his way home when it collapsed and the three of them fell into the river. Mr Joyce, sen., assisted his wife to the bank, but was unable to find his son. The body of Mr Joyce, jun., was recovered about two hours later. Artificial respiration was applied, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The river borders the farm op> which Mr Joyce worked with his father and at the spot where the accident occurred was approximately 75 feet wide. Although the tide was full, the bridge was about 25 feet above the level of the water. When examined, it was found that the_ wire and hand rail were broken.
