f LABOUR PARTY’S NOMINEE
MR D. BARNES IN BALLOT
It is now certain that the Labour Party will contest the Mayoralty of Christchurch in November. Among the six names mentioned, as having been nominated in the reopened list of candidates is that of Mr David Barnes, a former member of Parliament for Waitaki, and a director of the State Advances Corporation since January, i Mr Bsrnbs’s home is in Innes road, i St. Albans. During the recent war, he served as a flying officer in the I R.N.Z.A.F., having been a pilot in the Great War. Born in Lancashire 53 years ago, Mr Barnes was educated in Englana and came to New Zealand with his parents when he was 17 years c f age. He was working on his father’s larm at Waipara when the Great War broke out. He enlisted in December, 1914, and served on Gallipoli with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He • was wounded in August, 1915 and was invalided back to New Zealand. In ; 1917, he re-enlisted, this time in the .Flying Corps. I Returning to New Zealana in Sepi tember, 1919, Mr Barnes went on the land as manager of a number of holdi ings and took up Crown land at Fairlie iin 1927. Mr Bernes won the Waitaki seat in 1935, but was defeated in 1938. He unsuccessfully contested the Ashi burton seat for Labour against Mr I R. G. Gerard in 1943. ' The five other names which are likely to be considered by the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee when a ballot is held—nominations do not close until next Thursday—to select Labour’s mayoral candidate, are:—Mrs L. Jones (Ara-
nui), Messrs H. E. Denton (a former member of the City Council), H. H. McCaw (chairman of the Sydenham electorate committee at the last General Election), F. Kelso, and A. B. Grant.
| Citizeife’ Association Nominees No finality in discussions taking place among members of the Citizens’ Association in selecting a mayoral candidate is likely to be readied for at least one month. No date has been fixed for meeting of the nominations committee to make recommendations Ao a later general meeting of the association and a meeting of the association before September is unlikely. The two nominations are the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) and Cr. M. E. Lyons (chairman of the finance committee and of the Metronolitan Milk 1 Board).
