SKY RAIDER AND JOHNNIE LAWN

TROTTING

FIRST APPEARANCE AT ADDINGTON

M. Holmes said this week that the Australian pacers, Sky Raider and Johnnie Lawn, have done well since arriving at Russley and that they will make their first appearance at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington next month. Sky Raider, which is assessed on 2min lOsec, 2min 44sec, and 4min 27sec, is a seven-year-old horse by Raider from Canica. A successful performer in Australia, Sky Raider should do well in New Zealand. Raider, the sire of Sky Raider, has been a successful sire in Tasmania since being imported by Mr E. Tatlow from America, where he took a mile record of lmin 59}sec at the pacing gait as a four-year-old. In the same season he also took a mile record of 2min Ijsec as a trotter.

Johnnie Lawn, which is by Lawn Derby from the Derby Chimes mare. Chiming Rose, was lightly raced in Australia. The winner of the 1945 Sydney Derby in 3min 22Jsec, Johrinfe Lawn is a free-legged pacer and he has impressed good judges who have inspected him since his arrival. Lawn Derby, the sire of Johnnie Lawn, is well-known to Addington racegoers. Unhoppled and drived by his trainer, J. J. O’Shea, Lawn Derby was the first pacer outside America to enter the two-minute list, taking a record of lmin 59 2-ssec, at Addington in 1938. Sky Raider and Johnnie Lawn are both useful types and they should add interest to their races in New Zealand. Jottings R. M. Cook is working a gelding by Quite Sure from Chieftainess, which left a useful pacer in Loyal Chief to Grattan Loyal. Chief Officer, which is trained at Yaldhurst by A. Holmes, is a three-year-old colt by Gold Bar from Navy Blue, a smart mare which took a mile and a half record of 3min 15sec. L. Davidson has Jack High and PreEminence working well and they should be in good order for their engagements early in the new season. The six-year-old Chinook, which paid his way with four minor placings this season, will make his next appearance at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington next month. French Gold, a three-year-old gelding by Gold Bar from Marie Louise, is, one of the most likely improvers in J. Purdon’s team at Addington. Countless has earned £2235 for a win and six minor placings this season. A Neat Filly Besides True Comrade, the New Brighton trainer, J. W. Fraser, is training a neat three-year-old filly for Mr R» Kennedy. By Grattan Loyal, the youngster is out of Jean Drusus, which is by Drususb from Effie Woods Dillon. Fraser’s team also includes SHver Volo, which showed signs of returning to the winning list when he recorded two fourth placings at his last two starts for the season. A five-year-old son of Lusty Volo, Silver Volo appears to be near his best form again and he should prove a profitable pioposition in the new term. From a Winning Family a A - Gourlay’s team of nine horses at Addington includes a gelding by Gold Bar from Synthetic Silk, which is by Silk Thread from the Great Audubon mare, Nyallo, which left a family of winners including Nyallo Silk, Taxpayer, Spey Royal, Passport, Ratepayer, Refund, Virginia Girl, All Gallant and Nyallo Scott. A gelding by U Scott, Nyallo Scott headed the list of stake-earners J he sea son with a grand total of £7730. Unlucky J. D. Smith’s team at New Brighton includes a rising four-year-old pacer by Gold Bar from Rebel Girl, which left a winner in Suffragette to Jack Potts. Smith has been unlucky with Rebel Girl, which - foaled in 1937. 1940, and 1941 to Jack Potts, but the foals all died within 24 hours. By Brigand. Rebel Girl is out of Raven’s Girl, by Lauderdale from a Childe Harold mare. Nearing Cup Class W. J. Doyle, who trains his team at Lecston, said yesterday that he will probably only have two horses, Rerewaka and In the Mood, racing at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting next month. A speedy daughter of U. Scott and Princess Napoleon, In the Mood is now bordering on cup class, being assessed on 2min Bsec, 2min 42sec, and 4min 22sec. After being unplaced at her first three starts this season, In the Mood struck form and her last 10 starts yielded a win, four second placings, a third placing, and a fourth placing. A genuine maae, In the Mood has a brilliant finishing burst, and she should continue to pay her way in the new term. Out of a Winner

Mr J. Becker, Ahaura, is sending a yearling colt to be trained at Addington by C. A. Tasker. By Noble Scott, the youngster is out of a winner in Highborn, which is by Truman Direct from Cappriccio, by O.Y.M. from Cappadocia, by Rothschild from Cassanda, by St. George (a thoroughbred) from Mrs Rawdon, by King of Clubs (a thoroughbred). A Useful Trotter

A. E. Dawson, who is now training his team at New Brighton, expects to add the Quite Sure gelding, Never Sure, and the trotter, Doreano, to his team shortly. Doreano showed his best form when trained by R. Townley this season to win the second division of the Domett Handicap at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting on March 15 from Pat Review. Improvements at Addington The work of widening the birdcage at Addington by 22 feet has now been completed, and the extra room provided should be appreciated by owners and trainers on race days. The area in front of the main public stand has been graded and patrons who are unable to obtain seating accommodaion should now be able to get an uninterrupted view of the racing. Looks the Part

C. Isaacson is working a good-looking two-year-old filly by the Jack Potts horse. Blaydon. from a winner in Hermes, which left a winner in Hargood’s Pride to Jack Potts. Hermes, which was bred by Mr A. W. Williams, is by Native King from Ivy Viking, by Harold Dillon from Black Betty, by Viking from a mare by Berlin
