AUCKLAND CUP STAKE
MELBOURNE COMMENT (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 30. “The Auckland Racing Club’s decision to give £lO,OOO and a gold cup worth £lOO for the Auckland Cup, to be run
on Boxing Day, and a special award of £250 to the trainer of the winner, makes the race the richest in Australia and New Zealand,” writes a correspondent in the ‘ Melbourne Herald.” "For almost a lifetime the Melbourne Cup has been the richest race. First Sydney and then Doomben have challenged, but now Auckland has capped the Victorian Racing Club’s big prize. “The Melbourne Cup this year will carry £lO,OOO, and a gold cup worth £3OO, so that the total is £6O less than the prize offered by the Auckland Racing Club. What is the Victorian Racing Club going to do about it?” He predicts that the Auckland Cup is almost certain to attract Australian owners to Ellerslie, particularly if it is possible to fly horses across the Tasman.
