SUNSHINE THIS MONTH

RECORD LIKELY DRY AND FROSTY JULY If the weether to-day is fine and clear, Christchurch will have had more sunshine this month than in any July since official records have been kept. Very little rain has fallen during the month. A total of 150.24 hours of sunshine has beeij recorded at the meteorological station at Wigram from July 1 to July 29. With the further 8.6 hours of sunshine that may be edded if the weather remains fine to-day, this total will easily exceed the previous maximum sunshine recording for July of 154.5 hours, in 1945. Another high total of 153.6 hours sunshine was recorded in 1937. This figure was well above the July average of 121.6 hours. The monthly recordings of sunshine at Christchurch since 1928, the earliest year for which accurate records are available, are as follows:

Should the last two days of the month be sunny, the total figure may well approach 166 hours, which is about the average amount of sunshine that might be obtained in a month like March. On July 22 and July 23 this year 8.9 hours of sunshine were recorded, and on July 19 there were nine hours of sunshine.

According to figures supplied daily by the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. only 16 poihts of rain have so far fallen at Christchurch this month, compared with the normal amount of 2.652 inches. The smallness of this figure can be judged from the fact that July rainfall recordings at Christchurch during the last nine years have ranged from .87 inches in 1941 to 8.03 inches in 1939. Until yesterday. 20 frosts had been recorded during the month, while on July 11 and July 16 high temperatures of 62.6 degrees and 63.4 degrees were recorded. The average temperature for July is 42.09 degrees. There was another fost last night, bringing the total to 2L
