VICEREGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 29. This morning at Government House the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg) presented to Flight Lieutenant Harold John Sheild, D.F.C., R.N.Z.A.F., of Patea, a bar to his Distinguished Flying Cross. This afternoon, his Excellency received Mr H. F. Carpenter, president, and Dr. A. M. Allen, secretary of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries, London, and Mr N. R. Chapman, Presidentdesignate of the New Zealand branch, and Mr F. H. Bass, the Wellington vice-president. Miss Jean Begg has arrived at Government House.

Commodore G. W. G. Simpson, C.8.E., R.N., the new chief of the Naval Staff, arrived at Wellington yesterday on the Rimutaka.—(P.A.)

Dr. H. C. W. Stringer, of Christchurch, has been admitted to the Royal College of Physicians as a member. Before he entered the R.N.Z.A.F., Dr. Stringer, who qualified at Otago University, was a house surgeon at the Christchurch Public Hospital. On his discharge from the Air Force he went to Edinburgh, where he completed his studies for the qualification of M.R.C.P. Messrs C. T. Denby, F. V. Thomas, and C. Hayward were elected life members of the Pioneer Amateur Sports Club at the annual meeting of the club last evening. Mr Denby has been associated with the club for 55 years, and Messrs Thomas and Hayward for more than 20 years.

Mr C. B. Burdekin, who has served for 26 years in the office of the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, returned to Wellington by the Rimutaka yesterday. His last assignment was as New Zealand representative on the War Crimes Trials Commission. (P.A.)

Mr J. Thorne, of the Rangiora branch of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., has been transferred to the Pukekohe branch of the bank. He will be replaced by Mr D. R. England (Wellington). Mr A. L. Power, of Christchurch, accompanied by his wife, arrived in Auckland by air yesterday. Mr Power manager of the New Zealand team which attended the world amateur roller skating championships in Oakland, California.—(P.A.)
