Kaikorai, G.P.W LIBERTY SHIPS FOR SHAW SAVILL LINE The two Liberty ships, Samrich and Samsylvan, which the Shaw Savill Line has for the last three years been managing for the British Ministry of Transport, have been acquired by Shaw Savill and Albion Company, Ltd.; and will form part of that company’s cargo service from New Zealand and Australia to Britain, says the “Daily Commercial News and Shipping List” (Sydney). These two vessels were built in 1943, to the order of the United States War Shipping Administration, for handling by the British Ministry of War Transport—the Samsylvan at Baltimore. Maryland, and the Samrich at Portland. Maine They are identical in all essential details, being 423 feet long, 57 feet in beam, with a depth of 35 feet. They have triple expansion 3-cylinder engines driven by nil fuel and have cruiser stems. Their American tonnage is -7219 gross, but this figure will probably be altered when‘they come under the British standard measurement of tonnage. In the war yeers the Samsylvan pursued a more or less uneventful course as a commercial cargo carrier under the orders of the Ministry of War Transport but the Samrich was, for a long period, on more direct war service During the invasion of the Continent bv the United Nations’ armies she made many trips tn and from the invasion beeches with men and vehicles of war of every descrintinn and she was the fi r st vess®] to enter Antw*'’’n after its liberation.

The Samrich is unde the command of Cantain A. C. Jnnes. Cantain G. Camp- . bell formerly chief officer of the mv. Walranei. has b»»en promoted to take command of th** Samsylvan.

As soon as *he transfer Is completed the two vessels ”’ll] be renamed into the well-known Savill nomenclature of “TC”—the Samcvlv?n will be-ome th* Tronic and, the Samrich the Cuflc and thev will be reoamted in the Bh»w Savill colours at the earliest opportunity.
