NORTH ISLAND TOUR
Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery
CROWDS LINE STREETS
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH. July-25. Thousands of Taranaki people crowded into New Plymouth to-day to give an enthusiastic welcome to Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery, who arrived at Bell Block aerodrome at 11 o’clock this morning, and was cheered practically all of the four miles into the town by people who lined the route. The weather was brilliantly fine, and Field-Marsha] Montgomery had a clear view of the snow-capped Mount Egmont, which he saw for the second time. Mount Egmont was the first bit of New Zealand he sighted when his aeroplane crossed the Tasman on July 16. An official reception, led by the Mayor (Mr E. R. C. Gilmour), was given Field-Marshal Montgomery. He also met disabled servicemen.
Arranged through the New Plymouth Rotary Club, a box of Taranaki butter was presented to FieldMarshal Montgomery and will be sent home for use by his household.
