WANGANUI VISIT
RETURNED MEN AND WOMEN
SPECIAL SECTION AT CIVIC RECEPTION
(P.A.) WANGANUI. July 25. Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery arrived by car in Wanganui from Ohakea punctually on schedule at 3.30 p.m., and after a civic reception at Cook’s Gardens left again for Palmerston North by car. All along the densely-packed main street, Victoria avenue, his appearance was the signal for cheering. On arrival on the central portion of Cook’s Gardens Field-Marshal Montgomery was greeted by a crowd estimated at 10.000 assembled on the terraces. Members of the Returned Services’ Association were in a roped-off area on the ground, and there were three cars with returned men undergoing treatment in hospital Field-Marshal Montgomery walked along the lines of former servicemen and women before leaving.
