RUGBY LEAGUE

N.Z. TOUR OF FRANCE AND ENGLAND BROADCASTING SUGGESTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 3. The broadcasting of matches to be played by the New Zealand Rugby League team in England and France is being investigated by the National Broadcasting Service. This information was given by the Minister in charge of Broadcasting (Mr F. Jones) in reply to an urgent question by Mr T. E. Skinner (Government, Tamaki) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Skinner asked that all New Zealand representative teams touring overseas should be granted the same broadcasting facilities as the Kiwi Rugby team on its tour of England and the New Zealand Rugby team on its tour of Australia. Mr Skinner said a large section of the public was keenly interested in the Rugby League team shortly to visit England and France. Mr Jones replied that the best broadcasting facilities available would be provided for teams overseas, having regard to the cost of such facilities, the relative amount of public interest in each tour, and the extent to which broadcasts could be picked up from countries in which the tours were made. Inquiries on the last aspect were being made from the 8.8. C. about the Rugby League team’s tour.*

EXTRA TRIAL GAME NOT ARRANGED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 3. “The holding of a further trial match in addition to those already scheduled before the final selection' of the New Zealand League touring team has not been considered by the New Zealand League Council,” said the president of the New Zealand League (Mr J. A. Redwood) in discussing persistent rumours that an extra trial would be held next week. The selectors had been instructed to pick the touring team after the North v. South match on Saturday, he said. However, if the selectors considered it necessary to hold an extra trial, the matter would then be considered by the council.
