YESTERDAY IN THE HOUSE

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 2.

For the second night there were only two speakers in the House of Representatives in the Address-in-Reply debate, but they were two of the leading speakers in the House, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) and the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash). Mr Holland made special mention of Maoris, claiming that if they were to have special advantages they must also accept obligations, and his remarks drew a spirited reply from Mr Nash. Mr Nash’s early participation in the debate was a surprise, as it had been thought that either the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) or the Minister of Labour (Mr A. McLagan) would follow Mr Holland. The House adjourned at 9.47 p.m. till 2.30 to-morrow.

It was no novelty for Mr J. T. Paul, in the Legislative Council, to take a prominent part in the Address-in-Re-ply debate in that chamber this evening. He was the mover of the Address-in-Reply motion in the Upper House almost 40 years ago to the day, and to-day he was the The mover was Mr James Roberts, president of the Labour Party, whose speech attracted an unusually big attendance for the Upper House. In accordance with Legislative Council tradition, both the mover and seconder were in evening dress.
