BUTCHERY TO BE CLOSED
FOOD CONTROL OFFICE ORDER SALES EXCEEDED COUPON VALUES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 11. The butchery of A. E. Preston, Ltd., Willis street, Wellington, will be closed from next Monday by order of the Food Control Office on the ground that its sale of meat has exceeded the value of coupons taken. The shop is situated in one of the busiest areas of the city. How long it would be closed could not be ascertained to-day, but an official of the Food Control Office said that it would be “a matter of weeks.” The closing of the shop was a fault of the rationing system, and was due to an attempt to meet the needs of the public, said Mr A. E. Preston, jun., to-day. At rush times it was impossible for assistants to make a check to see if the right value of coupons was being handed across for meat. Some customers were reluctant to give any coupons, while others did not give the proper number. He did not wish to blame the assistants or customers for a situation that was quite natural in the circumstances- To attempt to make a proper check of coupons that were handed in could not be done during the present short? ge of labour without slowing down business to an almost hopeless degree.
