CANADA’S EXPORT TRADE
IMPROVEMENT SHOWN THIS YEAR (Commonwealth Feature Service.) OTTAWA, June 2. Canada's export trade picture in the first four months of 1947 has brightened. Total exports from Canada for that period had a value of 788,000,000 dollars, compared with 699,100,000 dollars for the first four months of 1946 and with 254,100,000 in the first four months of 1938. Shipments to the United Kingdom were higher by 5,400,000 dollars than in 1945, and showed an increase of 11,700,000 dollars to the British Commonwealth and Empire countries in the Western Hemisphere. N.Z. Purchases Purchases by New Zealand indicated an increase of 1.000,000 dollars, while those by Australia were higher by 11,000,000 dollars than in the corresponding period last year. Canada’s exports to the Union of South Africa, Northern and Southern Rhodesia and other sections of British South Africa were 13,800,000 dollars higher during the first four months of 1947 than in the same period of 1946. In Latin America purchases of Canadian commodities for the period under review were valued at 44,900,000 dollars, representing an advance of 15,800,000. Exports to European countries, other than Great Britain, were, with the one exception of Italy, lower during the period by 25,800,000 dollars than in the 1946 period. Shipments to Belgium declined by 14,600,000 dollars, to Russia by 9,000,000 and to France by 4,700,000. Exports to Italy were 3,100,000 higher
