N.Z. COMMISSION ON GAMING

COPIES OF REPORT FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA (Rec. 7 p.m.) PERTH, June 11. The Western Australian Government has made arrangements with the New Zealand Government to.be furnished with copies of the report of the Royal Commission investigating gaming in the Dominion. This follows the Government’s decision to inquire into the position in Western Australia, where startingprice betting has flourished for many years. During the life of the last Government, legislation was introduced to legalise starting-price betting within limits, but it was rejected. As a result of a police drive, there has been a diminution in the volume of illegal betting in the metropolitan area. In country districts, however, and especially in the goldfields, it still flourishes. By constant changing of dummies, operators usually come within the first-offender provisions.
