BRITISH TRADE WITH JAPAN
PROSPECTS DISCUSSED BY “THE TIMES” (Rec. 8 p.mJ LONDON, June 10. Commenting on the Washington announcement that limited private trading is to be permitted with Japan from August 15, “The Times” says: "Before the war British commercial interests in Japan were deeply rooted and in many respects could challenge comparison with those of any other nation, but the predominantly American shape assumed by the Allied occupation has inevitably led to a decline of British influence in the economic as well as the political sphere. “For this reason the revival of British trade with Japan will encounter certain handicaps. The many American businessmen who have served with the United States occupation forces have had ample necessarily denied their British competitors, to survey the field, and it seems probable that for some time to come control over Japan’s foreign trade will continue to be exercised by the American officials of General MacArthur’s headquarters.”
