NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL CRITICISED CONDUCT OF TEST TRIALS “A rhost inconsistent crowd” was the description applied to the council of the New Zealand Football Association by Mr R. Smith at a meeting of the Canterbury Football Association last evening, when he criticised the arrangements for, and conduct of, the Dominion trials held at Wellington last Saturday for the purpose of choosing a test team to meet the visiting South Africans. Mr Smith said that Canterbury players who had travelled to Wellington for the matches had not been met on their arrival, and that no hotel accommodation had been arranged for them. One player had not been given a game at all, said Mr Smith, and several others had had to play under adverse conditions. "I don’t think our players got a fair chance at all. I hope the organisation for the South Africans’ tour will be better than this,” he said. The president (Mr J. E. Jones) said that though he agreed with Mr Smith’s views, he did not think anything should be done until the test team was announced. The New Zealand Council’s organisation of the South Africans’ tour would be a flop, predicted Mr J. Smith, The selector’s action of not announcing the test side until after the first game had been played against Auckland, was condemned. A member: The team is probably picked already. Mr Jones: I’m quite satisfied that it is. The meeting decided to defer any action until the test team was announced. No definite advice was received from the New Zealand Council about the match against South Africa on June 28, which may be a test, or a game against a New Zealand eleven. Arrangements to play a West Coast representative team as a cur-tain-raiser to this game were made. Canterbury representatives would meet the South Africans on July 9, it was announced.
