RUGBY FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY UNION MEETING OF COMMITTEE “I can hardly see the use of having a programme. Half the players have not got numbers, and the figures on others cannot be distinguished,” said Mr C. H. McPhail at a meeting of the management committee of the • Canterbury Rugby Union last evening, when the printers of the official programme asked that copy for the Saturday programmes be sent in early. A cut in electric power had presented difficulties. Mr V. L. Jensen, who presided, said clubs should co-operate with officials in supplying early the names of teams to play. With the cutting out of Thursday evening training, selectors should be ablC to name (heir teams earlier than had been possible previously. The following selectors were appointed: —senior reserve; Messrs A. P. Simpson, W. Shaw, and W. Whitham; second grade: Messrs W. Yates, J. Middleton, and G. Suckling; third grade; Messrs A. Lilburne, H. Cox, and T. Long; fourth grade: Messrs J. E. Jones, A. Fanning, and L. T. Rountree. Mr J. K. Johnson said that though the standard of football was generally rising, he regretted to say that late tackling in games was noticeable. In several lower grade games he had seen, late tackling was an unwelcome feature. It was a question of which referees should take notice. The chairman suggested that Mr H. T. Coulter, representative of the Referees’ Association, should draw the attention of his members to the complaint made. The Southland Rugby .Union said its touring team would play South Canterbury on September 17 and Canterbury, at Lancaster Park, on September 20. The competitions committee recommended that from next Saturday the starting times for the main games should be at 2.45 p.m. and other games at 1.15 p.m.
