ACTION BY SUPPLY AUTHORITIES
MEASURES TO MEET CRISIS The emergency committee of the South Island Regional Conference of the Power Boards’ Association held a meeting in committee yesterday morning and adopted a number of recommendations for action by power supply authorities affected by the crisis. After the meeting, the chairman (Mr M. E. Lyons) said that the recommendations adopted were:— (1) Complete elimination of street lighting; (2) the restriction of waterheaters to night hours: (3) elimination where possible of all commercial heaters: (4) uniform action on the nonconnexion of ranges and similar appliances where there are other means of doing lheir work. Mr Lyons* said that the meeting bad confined itself to consideration of the negative nart of the situation. A further meeting would be held early, to deal with the question of increasing the generation of power throughout thA South Island. Each district would be left free to make the ordered savings in the manner best suited to individual circumstances. Mr Lyons said. The problem of poultry farmers with large incubators and brooders had been given full consideration, he said, and recommendations were made to all users that steps be taken to provide suitable stand-by equipment to cope with shutdowns.
