LATE SHOPPING NIGHT

RETAILERS TO DISCUSS POWER SAVINGS An attempt may be made to save late shopping night in Christchurch, at present threatened by a power shutdown between 6.45 and 7.45 p.m. The whole question of power economies and shopping hours during the emergency will be discussed by a meeting representing all retail groups this morning. Late shopping night has been cancelled in Dunedin: but there is no other cut affecting retail shops there. In Wellington, arrangements were made to nermlt Friday night shopping. Some Christchurch retailers contend that Friday night is the only opportunity many people have of doing any shopping, and they would like to retain it, if the power situation permits. If the meeting considers it desirabld, an approach may be made to the City Council for power to be available for late night shopping on Fridays.
