EVENING POWER CUTS
EFFECT ON THEATRES The new Christchurch power cuts are expected to have a marked effect on theatre's, which will have to finish their programmes by 10.30 p.m. The emergency lighting systems in the theatres will be used when picturegoers are entering and leaving; but the selling of tickets is a difficulty, as the emergency systems do not light ticket boxes. This will be met by improvisation. Shoppers’ sessions will be discontinued. Some theatres may run extra morning sessions. Theatres expect reduced attendances. Experiences in the North Island suggest that when all lights go off at 10.30 p.m. the number of picture-goers falls sharply. Even last evening, with the old schedule of cuts operating, houses were smaller than was expected. SAVING MADE BY R.S.A. Smaller globes have been put in all rooms of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association’s club, and no electric heaters are being used in the building. This was reported to a meeting of the executive of the association last evening. Before the announcement was mode that power would be cut off at 10.30 p.m., the house committee had decided that the billiards room would be closed at 10 p.m. said Mr P. H. Wood.
