CURRENT NOTES

Last week the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, and Lady Freyberg visited the Wilson Home for Crippled Children at Takapuna. Their Excellencies spoke to each of the 70 patients, exchanging friendly views on their handwork and various forms of occupational therapy. The thirty-sixth birthday social of the New Brighton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held recently. The president (Mrs E. Edward) presided and welcomed as guests representatives from a number of other branches.

Wool is not available at present far distribution amongst knitters who are willing to work for sailors; but it is hoped trfat supplies will soon be obtainable. This was reported at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society held yesterday. The president, Mrs G. W T . C. Smithson, presided. The guild’s visitors reported on visits paid to seamen in the hospital and sanatorium, and a record of the activities of the junior branch showed that members had had a busy time during the month of May.

A successful bridge party, organised by Miss E. Overton and Mrs M. E. JSegg .was held yesterday by members of the knitting circle of the National Club at the club rooms. Members of this circle, have knitted many garments for children of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes, and the money raised yesterday will be spent on wool for more garments, and also on food for Britain. There were 21 tables, and prizes given by Miss Overton were presented by the Mayoress (Mrs F. Hardy Cookson) to Mrs McCredite, Mrs W. A. Day, Miss Ella Bull, and Mrs R. Brown. ' At the monthly meeting of the Broadfield sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, it was decided to give a donation to the Hanmer Hospital library fund. Wool for knitting was distributed amongst members. Mrs Joblin presided and Mrs Boyle, who has been ill. was welcomed back.

The lady editor of “The Press” acknowledges receipt of magazines for patients at the sanatorium from Mrs J. P. Rickard, Mr Ewer. J. Burt, and several anonymous friends; also material for handwork from Miss Kirk. Mount Pleasant.
