PAINTING AND CLEANING OF TRAMS
BOARD MEMBER’S COMMENTS Many trams and trailers in Christchurch should be repainted, said Mr H. Kitson at a meeting of the Christchurch Tramway Board yesterday. About a year ago the board had been assured that one tram would be repainted each week, he said, and there had been an improvement for a while, but now trams were very shabby. He thought that the appearance of the trams—inside and outside —could be improved. One of the big problems was the number of accidents, said the general manager (Mr J. F. Fardell). Staff had to be diverted from repainting and other jobs to trams which had been damaged in collisions. “They would be better if we could keep motor-cars off the roads,” commented the chairman (Mr H. A. C. North), who said that during April, 44 of the total 57 accidents had involved cars. There had been complaints about the cleanness of trams, but he felt sure that the staff was doing its best. Mr J. S Barr: Then it’s a poor best. A suggestion was made by Mr Kitson that some mechanical device might be used for cleaning trams, and Mr Fardell assured the board that everything possible was being done.
