LAST ELECTION RESULT

COMMENT IN LABOUR PARTY REPORT

(P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 9. Although the Labour Government had remained in office, the election results did not allow complacency, said the annual report of the national executive of the New Zealand Labour Party, presented to the conference to-day.

“To say that the results of the General Election are entirely satisfactory is to under-estimate the feeling of the whole Labour movement,” continued the report. “After 11 years in which the fundamental points of Labour’s policy have been put into operation, bringing with them a period of unprecedented prosperity for the of our people, it was not too much to expect that the nation would return the best Government this country has known.”

It had been clearly indicated by th«» election results that reactionary and disruptive elements in the communitv were gathering forces which could be defeated only by the greatest possible unity and cohesion in the ranks of the party. This task fell heavily upon branches and. affiliations, but work in close harmony with the New Zealand Federation of Labour would assure e continuance of prosperity under a Labour Government.

“The problem to-day continues to be one of production,” the report added, “not only for our own needs, but also to enable us to help others less fortunately placed. This problem can be met only by the hard efforts of our people, inspired as they are with the desire to assist others and to maintain for themselves a just standard of living.”

Constant vigilance and co-operation between branches and industrial organisations. with a close study of the progress of the party policy, were needed more than ever.
