OBITUARY

MR A. E. B. GOODE * (P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 9. Mr A. E. B. Goode, general manager of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., whose death has occurred in Melbourne. entered the service of the bank in 1900. and after gaining experience m several Victorian branches was appointed sub-inspector for New South Wales and Queensland, with headquarters in Sydney. After a period in the general manager’s department in Melbourne, Mr Goode served as manager at the Perth and Sydney branches. He was appointed chief inspector in 1937. and general manager in 1940. During his banking career, Mr Goode travelled extensively, visiting the bank’s agents in the east and the United States, as well as visiting the bank’s board of directors in London. He is survived by his wife. MR J. S. TURNBULL Mr James Stuart Turnbull, whose death occurred yesterday at the age of 82 years, was well known as a designer of many houses and prominent buildings in Timaru and surrounding districts. Chalmers Church, the Grosvenor Hotel, and Oxford buildings are examples of his work. A son of the late Mr Richard Turnbull, who was the first Member of Parliament for Timaru after provincial councils were abolished, Mr Turnbull was born in George street, Timaru, where the premises of Beath and Company, Ltd., now stand. He began practise in Timaru as an architect before the beginning of this century.. and in 1919 Mr P. W. Rule, who had been in his employ since 1907, became his partner. The business became known as Turnbull and Rule. Mr Turnbull remained in active practice until about six years ago, when Mr Rule took over the business. Mr Turnbull was a life member of the South Canterbury Rugby Union, and a member of both the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society and South Canterbury Jockey Club. He is survived by his widow and three sons.
